Monday: Day 5 > Art Class
Tuesday: Day 6 > Library Class
Wednesday: Day 7 > Phys. Ed.
Thursday: Day 8 > Music Class
Friday: Day 9 > Computers and $1 Spartan Dress Down Day*

In Language Arts, we will continue with our reading strategies to become better readers. As you are reading with your child, ask him/her about what he/she has learned and how to use these strategies. In the Friday Folders you will find a Reading Strategies information sheet, keep these handy to use while you are reading. 

The first Spelling List was introduced today. The words are written in a notebook. If your child brings the notebook home that means he/she needs to practice spelling the words for the test next week. If this notebook does not come home, your child got 100% on the pretest and does not need to take the final test.

Math continues this week counting on a number line, even and odd numbers and looking for patterns. We have learned some fun math games that will be used during centers.

*Friday is Spartan Dress Down Day for $1. Students may wear jeans/sweats with a Spartan T shirt or a plain solid colored T shirt for $1.

Homework is to read any material with your child, at least once a day. When you are finished, write it on your September Reading Log.

Please sign and date the page on the back of the Friday Folder, thank you!

Book orders were due today but I will wait until tomorrow to send it in,

Monday: Day 10 > Art Class
Tuesday: Day 1 > Keyboarding
Wednesday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.
Thursday: Day 3 > Music Class
Friday: Day 4 > Computers and PICTURE DAY!

In Language Arts, we will continue with our reading strategies to become better readers. As you are reading with your child, ask him/her about what he/she has learned and how to use these strategies.

We are still building our stamina in order to have the muscle to do group work. Our Read to Self/Read to Someone stamina will be up to 16 minutes. The Writing stamina time will be 19 minutes by the end of this week.

The children have now been introduced to the Listening Center. By the end of the week we will learn another of our groups. We are really getting close to try group work. Hopefully if all goes well by the beginning of next week we can begin!

We are getting into our first unit in Math this week. The students will be collecting, sorting and organizing data. The papers that come home are yours to keep and review with your child. Math will also be using small groups so the stamina we are building throughout these first few weeks will benefit us tremendously.

Friday is Picture Day so please send in your PSP envelope with your child.

Homework is to read any material with your child, at least once a day.

This week you will be receiving a Reading Log. Whenever you read a book to your child or your child reads a book to you, write it on this paper.

Our goal is 15 books each month, but if you read more, I will send home another page…

9/3/18

Monday: (No Day) LABOR DAY – No School
Tuesday: Day 6 > Library Class
Wednesday: Day 7 > Phys. Ed.
Thursday: Day 8 > Music Class
Friday: Day 9 > Computer Class

Thank you for returning all of the paper work! We had a great first week and I am looking forward to another one.

In Language Arts, we will be adding to our reading strategies… The new strategies for this week will be Cross Checking for Accuracy. When we come upon a word that we are not sure of, after we attempt to sound it out, we ask ourselves, (1) Does is look right? (2) Does it sound right? (3) Does it make sense? Another strategy…Find, read and use interesting words to Expand our Vocabulary. Just like it states, we are looking for words that are new to read and write so that we can expand our vocabulary.

We will be building our stamina for group work. By the end of the week we will be up to reading 7 minutes with a partner or to ourselves. Building our writing stamina will be up to 13 minutes.

For Math, we will explore different manipulatives. We are learning how to use them and also working on our stamina to build the independent and group work time.

Homework is to read any material with your child, at least once a day.

Please sign and date the page on the back of the Friday Folder, thank you!

I hope you have a delightful week!

This Week's Happenings

8/27/18

Monday: Day 1 > Keyboarding
Tuesday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.
Wednesday: Day 3 > Music Class
Thursday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Friday: Day 5 > Art Class

Our first week is filled with new friends, new schedules, new procedures, new learning… I will send a letter home each week explaining what we will be working on as well as homework and tests.

In Language Arts, the students will be learning important reading strategies. In a few days, ask your child about…Check for Understanding-this is when we stop reading after a few pages and try to remember what we have read so far. If we are not sure then we Back Up and Reread. There are many more strategies to come…

Math class involves a lot of small group work, just like we will use in Language Arts. So this week we will be working to build our stamina to work independently.

Look for vocabulary cards to come home for science. These may stay home.

For homework, reading any material with your child is excellent.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

No School on Monday

Tuesday will be Day 6>Library Class

This Week's Happenings

5/28/18

Monday: No School – Memorial Day
Tuesday: Day 7 > Phys. Ed.
Wednesday: Day 8 > Music Class
Thursday: Day 9 > Computer Class
Friday: Day 10 > Art Class
Monday: Day 1 > Keyboarding
Tuesday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed. 12:00 Dismissal

Language Arts…Keep reviewing the words in the green notebook if your child is still having trouble reading them. I will continue to assess Reading Fluency for those students who have not met the 47 word per minute goal.

Read, read, read! Remember to continue to read all of the time. This should be done every day. You will only get better if you practice. Also, take advantage of the Accelerated Reader program. The children really enjoyed this in school. It helps them read for comprehension, which is an essential skill used all of the time.

Math…Geometry is still the topic we are working on but I will assess Math Fluency right up to the last day.

Keep practicing the addition facts to 20. This will give you a huge advantage. If these facts are memorized, it makes many other mathematic operations easier. After addition you can move to subtraction.

I hope you have a
super, safe summer!

Thank you for a great school year!

This Week's Happenings

5/21/18

Monday: Day 3 > Music Class
Tuesday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Wednesday: Day 5 > Art Class
Thursday: Day 6 > Library
Friday: No Day > CARNIVAL

Language Arts…Keep reviewing the words in the green notebook.

Listen to your child read the Decodable Book that comes home this week.

Spelling homework will be due Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Each misspelled word must be written 3 times. Spelling test will be on Thursday.

I will continue to assess Reading Fluency for those students who have not met the 47 word per minute goal.

Remember, when listening to your child read, use the strategies that we have been working on in school. Refer to the page sent home.

Math…Geometry is our topic and will continue throughout the week.

The addition fluency checks are still going strong. We have had a lot of growth. Keep practicing the flashcards, it is paying off! Review the facts with sums to 9 if your child has not reached the goal.

-Homework is to read any book your child is interested in every day and then add it to your reading log.

-Carnival for the PBIS reward will be on Friday. Please watch the weather and dress your child appropriately. Sunglasses and hats are permitted. Apply sunscreen before school. If you are sending in extra sunscreen, only lotion, no spray will be allowed.

This Week's Happenings

5/14/18

Monday: Day 8 > Music Class
Tuesday: Day 9 > Computer Class
Wednesday: Day 10 > Art Class
Thursday: Day 1 > Keyboarding
Friday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.

Language Arts…Please review the words in the green notebook. This week we will add another set of words. Not too many to go, only 2 sets left!

As I write this note, I am hopeful that when I schedule the spelling homework, I will not need to collect any just like last week. Every student spelled every word correctly for the past pretest so no one had homework! Look for the 5/21 Happenings to see when there will be homework, if necessary. (No Spelling for this week.)

Reading fluency is an important part of first grade. The one-minute goal for proficiency is 47 words read by the end of this school year. This will be on the final report card. Please keep reading. Many students are above 70 words a minute, which is fantastic! Any questions? Just ask.

Remember, when listening to your child read, use the strategies that we have been working on in school. Refer to the page sent home.

Math…Last week we did not get as far as I thought we would into Topic 15. Geometry is the theme. Look for the pages that come home in the folder and review.
