In Phonics I will be assessing their fluency. The new sound/letter is Vv. Also new sight words are give, live and have. As always, review the page that is brought home.

Next week, the children will be reading a story of their choice to the class. Please assist your child in choosing a book/story you have at home to read out loud. Have your son/daughter read this to you so that he/she does not make many errors. Look for the list of readers to come home…

Topic 6 in Math will begin today. Subtraction Facts to 20 is the title, which is self explanatory as to what we will be learning. Keep practicing the facts that we have learned to this point.

Have a great end of the week and weekend!

Monday will be Day 2>Phys. Ed. Please wear your sneakers!

This Week's Happenings

Friday will be an early dismissal! Children will be dismissed at 1:00.

Phonics Lessons are going to be fewer than normal this week. We will be learning the Floss Rule on Monday. So look for the page to come home in your child’s take-home folder. The children have the BACK for homework, not the front. Please let them complete this on their own and then you can check it with them. Send it back on Tuesday.

Look for the green folder to come home again this week with Decodable Reader 17. Please read this with your child at least 2 times. Remember to sign it! Thank you for your cooperation. We are continually working on fluency, expression, accuracy and comprehension. These are skills that when mastered make us better readers and certainly better prepared for second grade.

Spelling List #8 will be introduced this week. Please go over the spelling of these words.

On Tuesday we will be traveling to the High School to attend the High School Band/Chours concert. The school busses will be taking us back and forth. (This performance is for the students only.)

I hope you have a fantastic week and a
Happy Holiday!

9/23/13

Monday: Day 4 > Computer Class

Tuesday: Day 5 > Art Class

Wednesday: Day 1 > Music Class

Thursday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.
Wear Sneakers!

Friday: Day 3 > Library Class

Due to the very busy Friday we had this past week, we did not get to the sound of f. So this week we will be studying the sounds of f, h, g and r. There are new sight words to learn-into, to, who, do, you, your and of. Please review these when the pages come home in the Take-Home Folders. You may see Fluency papers in the folder too. Those students who need a little extra practice will have to review these for homework. We are working on not having to sound out the words but read them smoothly without hesitation.

Continue to review the Reading Strategies. We added some new ones: Use the Pictures and Reread Text. The ‘use the pictures’ will go under the heading of Accuracy, which will help us make sure our words match the picture. ‘Reread text’ is used to help with Fluency. When you reread something it will become more fluent.

As you can see Fluency is very important. Fluency is the ability to read quickly, accurately and expressively. Fluent readers know how to read at an appropriate pace, how to attend to punctuation and how to group words into meaningful phrases. Fluency is a necessary skill for developing reading comprehension. Fluent readers can recognize words automatically and read with speed
and precision. Since fluent readers do not need to devote attention to figuring out each word, they are free to concentrate on the meaning of the text.

Subtraction will be in full swing. Review any pages in the take-home folder.

Remember that our room is cool, so send in a non-hooded sweater or sweatshirt. We do go outside for recess unless it is raining. Please remember a jacket or coat.

*Don’t forget to read any book/story that interests your child.*

I hope you have a fantastic week!

Monday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed. Hope you wore Sneakers!
Tuesday: Day 3 > Library Class
Wednesday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Thursday: Day 5 > Art Class
Friday: Day 1 > Music Class

The new sounds and concepts for this week in Phonics are words that contain vowels a, o, u with a consonant and silent e. For example: cake, pole and mule. Review the pages that come home in the take-home folder. The new sight word is two. Remember to complete the front of the Phonics page that is in the take-home folder. The children should code and read these words to you. During the week a Decodable Reader will be homework also. (Look for the green phonics folder.) The children should be reading this to you with little to no errors. We are continually working on fluency, so please have them read it more than once. Sign the back and return it the next school day.

List #6 is in your child’s take home folder. Review and practice these words. An informal assessment will be given on Friday.

Topic 4 is in full swing in Math. We will be learning more strategies to help us with addition and subtraction. Please look over the page when it comes home and ask your son/daughter what they remember. Hopefully he/she will be able to tell you something about the lesson.

On Friday, your child will have a Guidance Lesson. You received a permission slip in the Friday Folder. Please review this and send it back as soon as possible.

I am trying again…Today your child has a book order form. If you choose to order, the due date is Thursday, November 20. There are some really good deals and inexpensive books. Our online code is on the form if you would like to order on the internet.

I hope you have an astounding week!

Monday: No Day > No School
Tuesday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed. Hope you wore Sneakers!
Wednesday: Day 3 > Library Book Exchange
Thursday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Friday: Day 5 > Art Class

The new sounds and concepts for this week in Phonics are contractions and words that contain vowels i and e with a consonant and silent e. For example: pike and concrete. Review the pages that come home in the take-home folder. The new sight words are sure, don’t and won’t. Remember to complete the front of the Phonics page that is in the take-home folder. NEW: Please sign the phonics page after your child has read these words to you.

Even though a Decodable Reader is not homework this week, please read something each night with your child. If possible, find a book or story on his/her level and let them read to you. Ask these questions: What/Who are the main character/s? What is the setting? Is the story real or fantasy/make-believe? What is the story all about (main idea)?

The story we are working on this week is called “Get the Egg”. Your child will bring home the book on Thursday. Read “Get the Egg”. By this time, your child has had many chances to practice this, so he/she should be reading with very few errors, fluently and with expression.

No new Spelling List this week!

Topic 4 is winding down. As always, review the pages that come home. We will finish the lessons this week, review and assess next week.

>>Book Orders are due Wednesday, November 20.

The new sounds and concepts for this week in Phonics are Xx, Yy and the digraph sh. Review the pages that come home in the take-home folder. The new sight words are bought, brought, fought, thought, could, should and would. Remember to complete the front of the Phonics page that is in the take-home folder. Please sign the phonics page after your child has read these words to you.

Look for the green folder to come home this week with Decodable Reader 15. Please read this with your child at least 2 times. After you are finished please remember to sign the book somewhere. It does not matter if it is on the front or back. Since we have completed 15 books, your child will begin bringing our older books home. You can use these to review concepts that have been taught.

No new Spelling List this week!

Any Math test copies that come home are for you to review and discuss. These do not need to be returned. If you don’t see one in the Friday Folder, then your son/daughter did not have any significant errors.
Topic 5 is Addition Facts to 20. Please review the Math work that comes home on a daily basis. Flashcards work really well when trying to memorize facts. Your children can create their own. Thank you for all of your cooperation!

On Thursday, December 5 our students will be traveling to the High School to perform in our Holiday Concert. Dress code appropriate clothing or ‘dress’ clothes can be worn.

Wow, it is Thanksgiving Break already! Our time has really gone by quickly. This week in Phonics I will be assessing their fluency. There will not be any new sounds/letters or concepts taught. Please continue to read over the holiday. In January, the children will be reading a story of their choice to the class. This would be a great time to look through some books/stories you have at home to pick and read out loud.

Topic 4 Assessment will be given Tuesday. Review pages will be in your child’s take-home folder today. Please check over these with your child.

Thank you for all your cooperation so far. There are many changes this year and you have been very patient and understanding. Thanks again.

I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving and a relaxing break!

Monday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed. Hope you wore Sneakers!
Tuesday: Day 3 > Library Class
Wednesday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Thursday: Day 5 > Art Class
Friday: Day 1 > Music Class

The new sounds and concepts for this week in Phonics are words that contain vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel patterns; the letter/sound of w, short u and long u. Review the pages that come home in the take-home folder. The new sight words are put, want and was. We will be doing Phonics Homework whenever a page comes home… Ironically, it will most likely not be the side that says Homework! Ha Ha! The children will code the words on the front of the paper and then they must read these words to you. During the week a Decodable Reader will be homework also. (Look for the green phonics folder.)The children should be reading this to you with little to no errors. We are continually working on fluency, so please have them read it more than once. Sign the back and return it the next school day.

The Reading Book will be sent home this week. Please read “The Big Blue Ox”. The words to review are on the pages before the story.

List #5 is in your child’s take home folder. Review and practice these words.

Five and Ten Relationships assessment was today. This was a Topic that many children had no trouble with. As with the last assessment, I will only send it home if there are errors to review. If you don’t see it then you know that he/she did well!

Our new topic, Topic 4 is Addition and Subtraction Facts to 12. The new topic is teaching strategies to help children remember the facts and figure them out if they don’t have them memorized. This topic will take us through the next couple weeks. Review all the pages that come home and practice the new concept.

I hope you have an astonishing week!

This Week's Happenings

10/21/13
Monday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed. Hope you wore Sneakers!
Tuesday: Day 3 > Library Class
Wednesday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Thursday: Day 5 > Art Class
Friday: Day 1 > Music Class

Red Ribbon Week-follow the schedule for each day

Monday and Tuesday will be assessment days in Phonics. The children will be reading a new Fluency Reader to me and showing me their knowledge of the letters and sounds we have studied so far. The new sound for this week is digraph th. Th makes 2 different sounds. Ask your child about them on Wednesday. Review the page that comes home in the take-home folder. The new sight words are their and there.

We are beginning our Reading Series this week. Your child will be bringing home a vocabulary list. Have your child read the words and use them in a sentence. (These words do not need to be spelled.) Next week the Reading book will be sent home to read the story. More information will be on next week’s note.

Spelling List #4 will be sent home today. It would be a great help to review these even though there will not be a formal test. I do have the children spell the words during our Phonics lessons. Spelling words that are grade appropriate is a Common Core Standard that everyone will have to meet before entering 2nd grade.

The new Topic in Math is Five and Ten Relationships. Look for the pages and review this new concept.

Please remember to complete and return the Parent-Teacher Conference Form. It is due Monday, November 4.

The weather is turning colder and recess will be outside unless it is below 40 degrees. Please dress your child to be outside for 30 minutes. You can send in hats, gloves, scarves, etc.

I hope you have a remarkable week!

This Week's Happenings

10/7/13

Monday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Tuesday: Day 5 > Art Class
Wednesday: Day 1 > Music Class
Thursday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed. Wear Sneakers!
Friday: Day 3 > Library Class

Our Phonics lessons this week will cover the sounds of b, m and e. The new sight words are what, from and are. Most of the students know how to rhyme but some of us need a bit more practice. Rhyming is a pre-reading skill. If you ask your child to give you rhyming words and he/she can not, review with them that rhyming words end the same. Please review all pages that come home this week.
Also continue to review our reading strategies. Ask your child questions about the story he/she reads. Reading and rereading the same story will build fluency. If a fluency word list comes home, please review for homework. Not all of the students will bring home a list.
Spelling List #3 will be sent home today. As I stated before, no formal test will be given but these words are spelled on a daily basis in class. Reviewing the list will benefit your child in many ways. It will help with writing and reading not just spelling.
This will be the last week we will spend on Topic 2 Understanding Subtraction. An assessment will be given next week. Look for the pages that come home this week and review these concepts. I will be reteaching any lessons necessary after reviewing on Friday. Tuesday 10/15 – final review day. Wednesday – assessment.

I hope you have an exceptional week!

9/16/13

Monday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Tuesday: Day 5 > Art Class
Wednesday: Day 1 > Music Class
Thursday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed. Wear Sneakers!
Friday: Day 3 > Library Book Exchange

This week we will be studying the sounds of d and f. Also some new concepts: blends, sight words-said and of, and our first Fluency Reader! Please review these when the pages come home in the Take-Home Folders. Lesson 15 in our Phonics series is an assessment. This will help me see what your children have retained up to this point. If there are deficits, we will work on these in small groups as needed. This will occur every five lessons. If you are reviewing these pages it will really help to keep your child on target.

Our first math assessment will be given this week. Review these: adding to 9, knowing that changing the order of the numbers does not change the answer, counting objects and putting them together. You will see pages in the take-home folder. Please look over them tonight.

We will begin our next Topic in math after our assessment, which is Understanding Subtraction. Review any pages in the take-home folder later this week.

Ask your child about the Reading Strategies that we have been studying.
Comprehension: Check for Understanding and Back up and Reread
Accuracy: Cross-Checking and Flip the Sound
Expand Vocabulary: Tune Into Interesting Words

*As always read any book/story that interests your child.*

I hope you have a wonderful week!

The year is off to a great start! The girls and boys took a baseline test in reading to see what they remember from kindergarten. Overall the results were not too bad. They also completed a readiness test in math. Again, these results were right on target.
