This Week's Happenings

10/1/18

Monday: Day 5 > Art Class
Tuesday: Day 6 > Library Class
Wednesday: Day 7 > Phys. Ed.
Thursday: Day 8 > Music Class
Friday: Day 9 > Computers – EARLY DISMISSAL 12:00

Wow, the first phonics, spelling and listening comprehension tests were fantastic! Look for them in this week’s Friday Folder. The students will be assessed again this week. The phonics skills are short i and x. There are a few students that need to take the spelling test this week.

Another Decodable Reader will be sent home on Tuesday. Please listen to your child read this to you several times for fluency. All of the words in the story are words they should know or able to sound out.

Spelling homework on Wednesday is to write each misspelled word from the pretest three times, this is only for the students who are taking the test.

Spelling test will be on Thursday. I will be asking the students to read the words in the blue Vocabulary notebook on Thursday as well. Please read these words with your child.

We are always working on our reading strategies. Please refer to the page I sent home when reading with your child. When you use the same language at home as they hear in school, it will really solidify the strategies and make them become automatic when they read independently.

Unit 1 in Math will be wrapping up this week. Our assessment will be on tally marks, number lines, reading information on a graph and counting objects and writing the number to match.

September Reading Logs are due tomorrow. Please send in any completed logs. If the Log is not complete, these books can be transferred to the October Log.

Homework is to read any book your child is interested in and then add it to your reading log.

Please sign and date the page on the back of the Friday Folder, thank you!

I hope you have an enchanting week!

No School on Monday, October 8!

Tuesday (10/9) will be Day 10 > Art Class

Spelling homework on Monday is to write each misspelled word from the pretest three times.

On Wednesday, we will get our second list of spelling words. If your child brings home the green spelling notebook, he/she will have written homework. The final test on the short i list will be next week.

Our Daily 5 groups will begin this week. All of our hard work building the stamina needed to make this a success will soon start to pay off.

Math will be to create, organize and represent mathematical ideas. We are continuing our group work during math journal, technology, math games and working with different materials to find answers. Any pages that come home should be reviewed with your child and are yours to keep.

This Week's Happenings

9/17/18

Monday: Day 5 > Art Class
Tuesday: Day 6 > Library Class
Wednesday: Day 7 > Phys. Ed.
Thursday: Day 8 > Music Class
Friday: Day 9 > Computers and $1 Spartan Dress Down Day*

In Language Arts, we will continue with our reading strategies to become better readers. As you are reading with your child, ask him/her about what he/she has learned and how to use these strategies. In the Friday Folders you will find a Reading Strategies information sheet, keep these handy to use while you are reading. 

The first Spelling List was introduced today. The words are written in a notebook. If your child brings the notebook home that means he/she needs to practice spelling the words for the test next week. If this notebook does not come home, your child got 100% on the pretest and does not need to take the final test.

Math continues this week counting on a number line, even and odd numbers and looking for patterns. We have learned some fun math games that will be used during centers.

*Friday is Spartan Dress Down Day for $1. Students may wear jeans/sweats with a Spartan T shirt or a plain solid colored T shirt for $1.

Homework is to read any material with your child, at least once a day. When you are finished, write it on your September Reading Log.

Please sign and date the page on the back of the Friday Folder, thank you!

Book orders were due today but I will wait until tomorrow to send it in,
in case someone forgot.

I hope you have a delightful week!

Monday: Day 10 > Art Class
Tuesday: Day 1 > Keyboarding
Wednesday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.

Friday: Day 4 > Computers and PICTURE DAY!

In Language Arts, we will continue with our reading strategies to become better readers. As you are reading with your child, ask him/her about what he/she has learned and how to use these strategies.

We are still building our stamina in order to have the muscle to do group work. Our Read to Self/Read to Someone stamina will be up to 16 minutes. The Writing stamina time will be 19 minutes by the end of this week.

The children have now been introduced to the Listening Center. By the end of the week we will learn another of our groups. We are really getting close to try group work. Hopefully if all goes well by the beginning of next week we can begin!

We are getting into our first unit in Math this week. The students will be collecting, sorting and organizing data. The papers that come home are yours to keep and review with your child. Math will also be using small groups so the stamina we are building throughout these first few weeks will benefit us tremendously.

Friday is Picture Day so please send in your PSP envelope with your child.

Homework is to read any material with your child, at least once a day.

This week you will be receiving a Reading Log. Whenever you read a book to your child or your child reads a book to you, write it on this paper.

Our goal is 15 books each month, but if you read more, I will send home another page…

Please sign and date the page on the back of the Friday Folder, thank you!

This Week's Happenings

9/3/18

Monday: (No Day) LABOR DAY – No School
Tuesday: Day 6 > Library Class
Wednesday: Day 7 > Phys. Ed.
Thursday: Day 8 > Music Class
Friday: Day 9 > Computer Class

Thank you for returning all of the paper work! We had a great first week and I am looking forward to another one.

In Language Arts, we will be adding to our reading strategies… The new strategies for this week will be Cross Checking for Accuracy. When we come upon a word that we are not sure of, after we attempt to sound it out, we ask ourselves, (1) Does is look right? (2) Does it sound right? (3) Does it make sense? Another strategy…Find, read and use interesting words to Expand our Vocabulary. Just like it states, we are looking for words that are new to read and write so that we can expand our vocabulary.

We will be building our stamina for group work. By the end of the week we will be up to reading 7 minutes with a partner or to ourselves. Building our writing stamina will be up to 13 minutes.

For Math, we will explore different manipulatives. We are learning how to use them and also working on our stamina to build the independent and group work time.

Homework is to read any material with your child, at least once a day.

Please sign and date the page on the back of the Friday Folder, thank you!
