This Week's Happenings

9/30/19

Monday: Day 1 > Phys. Ed.
Tuesday: Day 2 > Library
Wednesday: Day 3 > Music
Thursday: Day 4 > Art
Friday: Day 5 > Phys. Ed.

The first set of vocabulary words was introduced today. These are written in a BLUE notebook. Please review these words every day.

We ran out of time to take our second phonics assessment last week, so (ck) words will be assessed this week. Remind your child that a word that has a short vowel followed by the /k/ sound is spelled with ck.

There will also be a listening comprehension test on Thursday. You can help your child by asking them questions when reading to them or listening to them read a story.

We are always working on our reading strategies. Please refer to the page I sent home when reading with your child. When you use the same language at home as they hear in school, it will really solidify the strategies and make them become automatic when they read independently.

Unit 1 in Math will be wrapping up this week. Our assessment, on Tuesday, will be on tally marks, number lines, reading information on a graph and counting objects and writing the number to match.

Homework is to read any material with your child, at least once a day.

SPIRIT WEEK – PLEASE FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES AND SCHEDULE SENT HOME. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE PAPER, I SENT A MESSAGE ON CLASS DOJO LAST WEEK AS WELL.

Please sign and date the page on the back of the Friday Folder, thank you!

I hope you have a superb week!

This Week's Happenings

9/23/19

Monday: Day 4 > Art
Tuesday: Day 5 > Phys. Ed.
Wednesday: Day 6 > Computers
Thursday: Day 7 > Music
Friday: Day 8 > Art

The first Spelling List was introduced today. The words are written in a green notebook. If your child brings the notebook home that means he/she needs to practice spelling the words for the test on Friday. If this notebook does not come home, your child got 100% on the pretest and does not need to take the final test.

Any misspelled words on the pretest must be written 3 times each. This will be homework every day until the test on Friday.

Your children will also be assessed on their phonics skills. We will be concentrating on short a and ck this week. You can help your child by reviewing words that have short a and ck. The letters ck follow a short vowel, like sack and pick.

A decodable reader, Jack and Dad Pack, will be sent home on Thursday. Homework is to listen to your child read this to you.

Graphs, number sequence and ten frames will be the topics of math for the week. The children will be assessed on some of the skills they have been working on for the last 2 weeks.

This week your child will bring home a progress report. Please do not be alarmed that there will not be a Reading grade given at this time. As you know, we have just begun spelling and reading this week. Our time has been very well spent building our independent working muscles so that small group instruction goes as smoothly as it possibly can.

Homework is to read any material with your child, at least once a day.

I hope you have a magnificent week!

This week we will complete our stamina building. By the end of the week, we will be practicing actual groups for 20 and 25 minutes. Next week we will begin Reading and Spelling.

Math continues with counting on a number line, even and odd numbers and looking for patterns. Just a reminder…Any pages that come home may stay at home to review. The children have been doing really well in math centers. I am really proud of them all!

This Week's Happenings

9/9/19

Monday: Day 2 > Library
Tuesday: Day 3 > Music and PICTURE DAY!
Wednesday: Day 4 > Art
Thursday: Day 5 > Phys. Ed.
Friday: Day 6 > Computers

In Language Arts, we will continue with our reading strategies to become better readers. As you are reading with your child, ask him/her about what he/she has learned and how to use these strategies.

We are still building our stamina in order to have the muscle to do group work. Our Read to Self/Read to Someone stamina has been going very well. We will be up to 12 minutes by Friday. The Writing stamina is also continually gaining minutes each day.

The children were introduced to the Listening Center last week. We have 2 more groups to learn, word work and computers. These last groups will be presented and the students will then know all 5 of our ELA Daily 5 groups!

We are getting into our first unit in Math this week. The students will be collecting, sorting and organizing data. The papers that come home are yours to keep and review with your child. Math will also be using small groups so the stamina we are building throughout these first few weeks will benefit us tremendously.

Tuesday is Picture Day so please send in your PSP envelope with your child.

Homework is to read any material with your child, at least once a day.

This Week's Happenings

9/2/18

Monday: (No Day) LABOR DAY – No School
Tuesday: Day 6 > Computers
Wednesday: Day 7 > Music
Thursday: Day 8 > Art
Friday: Day 1 > Phys. Ed.

Thank you for returning all of the paper work! We had a great first week and I am looking forward to another one.

In Language Arts, we will be adding to our reading strategies… The new strategies for this week will be Cross Checking for Accuracy. When we come upon a word that we are not sure of, after we attempt to sound it out, we ask ourselves, (1) Does is look right? (2) Does it sound right? (3) Does it make sense? Another strategy…Find, read and use interesting words to Expand our Vocabulary. Just like it states, we are looking for words that are new to read and write so that we can expand our vocabulary.

We will be building our stamina for group work. By the end of the week we will be up to reading 7 minutes with a partner or to ourselves. Building our writing stamina will be up to 13 minutes.

For Math, we will explore different manipulatives. We are learning how to use them and also working on our stamina to build the independent and group work time.

With your permission, your child may bring in books from home to read in class. These will be added to their “Book Piles” which the children use in our Daily 5 Groups, Read to Self and Read to Someone
