The children did a great job with the vocabulary words last week. If your child has a paper stapled to the front cover these are the words that need extra practice. I will be listening to those children again.

Topic 5 in math will conclude after the break. There will be a few lessons this week and we will wrap it up the first week in January. Keep reviewing all pages that come home.

Don’t Forget! Reading any material that interests your child is excellent. This is considered HOMEWORK every single day. After reading the book, add it to the Reading Log. When reading or listening to your child read, remember to use those strategies that we have worked on since the start of the school year. (Check for Understanding, Use the Pictures, Flip the Sound, and so many more…)

Reading Logs will be due when we return in January.

We will be going outside for recess unless it is raining or below 40 degrees so send your son/daughter with weather appropriate clothing.

12/12/16

Monday: Day 8 > Music Class
Tuesday: Day 9 > Computer Class
2 Hour Data Delay >>> Wednesday: NO Day!
Thursday: Day 10 > Book Exchange
Friday: Day 1 > Art Class

Today, the new spelling list was pre-assessed. If your child had all the words correct, you will not see this TAN notebook. For the children who had errors, these words should be reviewed for the assessment. The assessment will take place next week.

The vocabulary words are still being assessed orally. This will continue throughout the week. We will also be adding our first group of words from Book 3. Keep reviewing these words in the BLUE notebook.

Topic 5 in math will add more strategies to find the sum for addition. No matter how many strategies your child is introduced to, memorizing the facts is the most beneficial. During this trimester, we will be focusing on math fluency because in the third trimester the students will be graded on it. Math fluency is like reading fluency. The facts need to be answered correctly, without hesitation. This will increase the number of facts completed. Look for more flashcards to come home !

On Thursday, the students will see a show called Brainshow Mania! Ask your son/daughter about it. In the past it has been a lot of fun.

Don’t Forget! Reading any material that interests your child is excellent. This is considered HOMEWORK every single day. After reading the book, add it to the Reading Log. When reading or listening to your child read, remember to use those strategies that we have worked on since the start of the school year. Topic 4 in math is almost complete. We will have one lesson this week and wrap it up next week. The assessment will be on 12/1, but if something in our schedule changes, it may have to be moved. I will keep you posted if it is going to be on a different day.

10/10/16

Monday: No School
Tuesday: Day 9 > Computer Class
TWO HOUR DELAY>>>Wednesday: No Day
Thursday: Day 10 > Book Exchange
Friday: Day 1 > Art Class

While wrapping up Book 1 I have noticed that most children know all of the vocabulary words! For those that didn’t know every word, I will send a list home for you to work on, so if a list does not come home, then just review the new words. If all goes well, new words will be in the blue notebook on Friday.

On Wednesday Book 1 will be sent home. Read any/all stories with your child. You can take turns reading page by page or your child can read the whole story to you. This book can stay home until Friday. You may add these stories to your reading log.

Use the reading strategies that we have been working on when your son/daughter is reading. Look for them to have comprehension and fluency. These are stories they are familiar with so asking comprehension questions should be simple for them to answer. The more they read the same story, the more fluency will increase.

We will continue Subtraction, keep reviewing those pages that come home. Also, the facts that we have been working on need to be memorized. Practice the doubles and plus 1 facts.

Don’t Forget! Reading any material that interests your child is excellent. This is considered HOMEWORK every single day. After reading the book, add it to the Reading Log.

On Tuesday, a Vocabulary Notebook (blue) will be in the Take Home Folder. Your child should be able to read these words without hesitation. This will be homework at least once a week. We will add new words with each new story.

Look for the Decodable Reader in the Take Home Folder this week. Please have your child read this to you several times. Fluency is our goal for these books. The more your child reads them, the more fluent they will become. (Fluency is when it is read smoothly with expression and is understood.)

Subtraction is still our topic in math. Review the pages that come home. Also, the children are practicing addition facts. We have done the doubles and plus 1s(0+0, 1+1, 2+2 and 2+1, 3+1, 4+1 etc.).

If you have not handed in your September Reading Log, I will still except them until tomorrow.

Don’t Forget! Reading any material that interests your child is excellent. This is considered HOMEWORK every single day. After reading the book, add it to the Reading Log.

Wednesday: Day 1 > Art Class
Thursday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.
Friday: Day 3 > Music Class

In Language Arts, we have been reading stories from our first book. Our focus has been short vowels. We will continue to work on Book 1 skills and stories for this week. You saw two Decodable Readers in your child’s Take Home Folder on Friday. There will be three more that come home this week. Please have your child read these to you and they may be added to your reading log.

The class is still working on reading strategies. As you read with your child, try to use the terminology on the page that was sent home.

Our first Math Assessment was WONDERFUL! The children really focused and everyone earned an Advanced rating. I am very happy and looking forward to the next topic which is Subtraction. These pages will be in the Take Home Folder each day we complete a lesson. It will be helpful if you review these concepts to prepare for the next test.

Hopefully, we will be wrapping up Chapter 1 in Science. We are discussing questioning, tools, safety and more in this chapter.

Don’t Forget! Reading any material that interests your child is excellent. This is considered HOMEWORK every single day. After reading the book, add it to the Reading Log.

So sorry, I did not get the Reading Strategies into the Friday Folder. I will have them in this Friday’s Folder. Again, please review and use these as you read with your child.

In Language Arts, reading strategies are still our focus. Our stamina is almost up to the limit for group time success! We will begin using our Daily 5 groups this week. Ask your children about the Daily 5 centers. I bet they will do a great job explaining.

For Math, our first assessment will be on Wednesday. Review the page that comes home on Tuesday to prepare for the test. Please sign and return the test in the Friday Folder.

Don’t Forget! Reading any material that interests your child is excellent. This is considered HOMEWORK every single day. After reading the book, add it to the Reading Log.

Book Orders due Tuesday, September 20. If you are ordering online, you need to use our class code, HFPD2. I know some of you already ordered so it must be working alright. Otherwise, send in the form and money in an envelope with your child’s name. Thank you!

9/12/16

Monday: Day 10 > Book Exchange
Tuesday: Day 1 > Art Class

Thursday: Day 3 > Music Class
Friday: Day 4 > Computer Class

In Language Arts, reading strategies are our focus. The students will learn a few more and on Friday you will find a list of what we have been working on in the Friday Folder. Please review and use these as you read with your child.

We are doing a super job building our stamina for group time. This week we will discover another group, Listening to Reading.

For Math, addition is still our topic. This week the pages that you see will look a little different. Please take a look and examine any errors on the pages that come home in the Take-Home Folder.

In Science we will continue with Chapter 1. One day this week vocabulary cards will be coming home. These are yours to keep. Review these once a week until new cards come home.

Don’t Forget! Reading any material that interests your child is excellent. This is considered HOMEWORK every single day.

This Week's Happenings

9/5/16

Monday: Labor Day
Tuesday: Day 6 > Art Class
Wednesday: Day 7 > Phys. Ed.
Thursday: Day 8 > Music Class
Friday: Day 9 > Computer Class

In Language Arts, the students have been learning important reading strategies. Ask your child about…Check for Understanding-this is when we stop reading after a few pages and try to remember what we have read so far. If we are not sure then we Back Up and Reread. Using the Pictures on each page will lead to understanding as well.

Another strategy we will review for this week will be Cross Checking for Accuracy. When we come upon a word that we are not sure of, after we attempt to sound it out, we ask ourselves, (1) Does is look right? (2) Does it sound right? (3) Does it make sense?

For Math, we will be finding new ways to think about addition. The lessons are ways to make 6, 7, 8 and 9. Please take a look and examine any errors on the pages that come home in the Take-Home Folder.

In Science we will discuss tools, materials and questioning that scientists use.

Don’t Forget! Reading any material that interests your child is excellent.

Comprehension and written tests will be tomorrow, also. Please read “Tippy Toe Chick, Go” tonight.

There will be a Decodable Reader to read on Friday. This should be read several times so that the children do not need to sound out any words. Therefore, they will achieve appropriate fluency. Sign the book and send it back on Monday.

Remember to review the words in the blue notebook. These words should be read on sight. They should not have to be sounded out. I have been listening to the children read these words to me as a final assessment on vocabulary words.

We will be beginning Topic 15 Geometry this week. Please review any pages that come home.

We are still working on memorizing addition facts up to 9. Math fluency is just as important and necessary as reading fluency.

Homework is always to read every night with your child.
