In Phonics I will be assessing their fluency. The new sound/letter is Vv. Also new sight words are give, live and have. As always, review the page that is brought home.

Next week, the children will be reading a story of their choice to the class. Please assist your child in choosing a book/story you have at home to read out loud. Have your son/daughter read this to you so that he/she does not make many errors. Look for the list of readers to come home…

Topic 6 in Math will begin today. Subtraction Facts to 20 is the title, which is self explanatory as to what we will be learning. Keep practicing the facts that we have learned to this point.

Have a great end of the week and weekend!

This Week's Happenings

Friday will be an early dismissal! Children will be dismissed at 1:00.

Phonics Lessons are going to be fewer than normal this week. We will be learning the Floss Rule on Monday. So look for the page to come home in your child’s take-home folder. The children have the BACK for homework, not the front. Please let them complete this on their own and then you can check it with them. Send it back on Tuesday.

Look for the green folder to come home again this week with Decodable Reader 17. Please read this with your child at least 2 times. Remember to sign it! Thank you for your cooperation. We are continually working on fluency, expression, accuracy and comprehension. These are skills that when mastered make us better readers and certainly better prepared for second grade.

Spelling List #8 will be introduced this week. Please go over the spelling of these words.

On Tuesday we will be traveling to the High School to attend the High School Band/Chours concert. The school busses will be taking us back and forth. (This performance is for the students only.)

I hope you have a fantastic week and a
Happy Holiday!

This Week's Happenings

9/23/13

Monday: Day 4 > Computer Class

Tuesday: Day 5 > Art Class

Wednesday: Day 1 > Music Class

Thursday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.
Wear Sneakers!

Friday: Day 3 > Library Class

Due to the very busy Friday we had this past week, we did not get to the sound of f. So this week we will be studying the sounds of f, h, g and r. There are new sight words to learn-into, to, who, do, you, your and of. Please review these when the pages come home in the Take-Home Folders. You may see Fluency papers in the folder too. Those students who need a little extra practice will have to review these for homework. We are working on not having to sound out the words but read them smoothly without hesitation.

Continue to review the Reading Strategies. We added some new ones: Use the Pictures and Reread Text. The ‘use the pictures’ will go under the heading of Accuracy, which will help us make sure our words match the picture. ‘Reread text’ is used to help with Fluency. When you reread something it will become more fluent.

As you can see Fluency is very important. Fluency is the ability to read quickly, accurately and expressively. Fluent readers know how to read at an appropriate pace, how to attend to punctuation and how to group words into meaningful phrases. Fluency is a necessary skill for developing reading comprehension. Fluent readers can recognize words automatically and read with speed
and precision. Since fluent readers do not need to devote attention to figuring out each word, they are free to concentrate on the meaning of the text.

Subtraction will be in full swing. Review any pages in the take-home folder.

Remember that our room is cool, so send in a non-hooded sweater or sweatshirt. We do go outside for recess unless it is raining. Please remember a jacket or coat.

*Don’t forget to read any book/story that interests your child.*

I hope you have a fantastic week!

Review the pages that come home in the take-home folder. The new sight word is two. Remember to complete the front of the Phonics page that is in the take-home folder. The children should code and read these words to you. During the week a Decodable Reader will be homework also. (Look for the green phonics folder.) The children should be reading this to you with little to no errors. We are continually working on fluency, so please have them read it more than once. Sign the back and return it the next school day.

List #6 is in your child’s take home folder. Review and practice these words. An informal assessment will be given on Friday.

Topic 4 is in full swing in Math. We will be learning more strategies to help us with addition and subtraction. Please look over the page when it comes home and ask your son/daughter what they remember. Hopefully he/she will be able to tell you something about the lesson.

On Friday, your child will have a Guidance Lesson. You received a permission slip in the Friday Folder. Please review this and send it back as soon as possible.

I am trying again…Today your child has a book order form. If you choose to order, the due date is Thursday, November 20. There are some really good deals and inexpensive books. Our online code is on the form if you would like to order on the internet.

The new sounds and concepts for this week in Phonics are contractions and words that contain vowels i and e with a consonant and silent e. For example: pike and concrete. NEW: Please sign the phonics page after your child has read these words to you.

Even though a Decodable Reader is not homework this week, please read something each night with your child. If possible, find a book or story on his/her level and let them read to you. Ask these questions: What/Who are the main character/s? What is the setting? Is the story real or fantasy/make-believe? What is the story all about (main idea)?

The story we are working on this week is called “Get the Egg”. Your child will bring home the book on Thursday. Read “Get the Egg”. By this time, your child has had many chances to practice this, so he/she should be reading with very few errors, fluently and with expression.

No new Spelling List this week!
