>Follow the Red Ribbon ‘Dress Up’ Schedule that was in the Friday Folder!

The new words in reading are: saw, tree, your, small. Again, these will be assessed orally. The book will come home this week to read “Get the Egg!” Along with reading the story, review the phonics skills on pages 124 and 126. There will be an assessment on all of these concepts next week.

Remember to continue reading any book that interests your child. This will help him/her review all of the reading strategies that we have been working on during the first two months of school. (Check for understanding, back up and reread, flip the sound, cross check, look for interesting words, read several times for fluency, etc.)

The new topic in math is “How can numbers to 10 be shown using 5 and some more?” We will work on ten-frames and addition. Please review the pages and make any corrections necessary. It is a very short chapter. This will be assessed next week.

Our Spelling class has a new format… A pretest will be given prior to getting the list. If your child knows the words then, he/she will not take the test again. This will be sent home during the week. It will be in the take-home folder. The pretest was given last week. There were 5 children who spelled everything correct. When you see the test in the folder, you will know if your child should be reviewing the words for the next assessment. The final test will be next week.

**The children will go outside for recess whenever possible. Please make sure your child is dressed to go out unless it is raining. You may send in gloves, hats, scarves, etc. Thank you!

ALL ASSESSMENTS FROM NOW ON WILL BE SENT HOME IN THE FRIDAY FOLDER. THEY MUST BE SIGNED AND RETURNED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION WITH THIS CHANGE.

Please place your child’s costume in a bag. No need to send in a snack on Friday.

I hope you have a fun-filled week!

Our Subtraction assessment was taken today. You will find it in your child’s Friday Folder. This must be signed and returned. Please review the page and if you have any questions, let me know.

This Week's Happenings

10/14/14

Monday: No School
Tuesday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Wednesday: Day 5 > Art Class
Thursday: Day 1 > Music Class
Friday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.

Beginning with the story “A Fox and a Kit” that we started last week, the words that your son/daughter will need to read will not only be found in the book but I will also put them in this note. So for this story which will be assessed next week, the words are: eat, four, five, her, this, too. Please have your child read these words. It is not necessary to be able to spell them. These words will now be assessed orally. The student will individually read sentences that contain the words.

The reading book will come home to read “A Fox and a Kit” as well as a decodable reader this week. The pages before the story, beginning with 98, are a great review of the phonetic concepts and high frequency words that will be assessed. Read the decodable book to practice the phonics skills. Also, read it a few times to build fluency.

We are nearing the end of subtraction. The pages that come home on Friday will be the review for the test that is to follow next week. Continue to look over the work and make corrections if needed.
Review the words in the spelling book, test on Friday.

**Don’t forget to send in your party money if you have not done so already. Please place it in an envelope with your child’s name on it. Thank You!

New spelling and vocabulary words will be introduced and assessed at the end of next week. We are continually working on the reading strategies. Look for informational pages in the Friday Folder. We are still working on Subtraction. This will continue throughout this week. Look for the pages to review or make corrections. Tomorrow will be our 2nd Language Arts assessment. Please review the words on page 43 in the Reading book. Also review the phonics pages 42 & 44. These two sounds will be assessed, short i and x.

The rest of the week will be about animals that help people. We begin our new story “The Big Blue Ox”. The assessment for this story will not be until some time next week. The children will get new spelling words but they will not be assessed this week either.

We will continue to use our reading strategies, for comprehension>check for understanding, use the pictures; for accuracy>cross check, flip the sound, chunk sounds and blend letters; for fluency>reread the story several times and for expanding vocabulary>tune into interesting words. I know this sounds like a lot…but if you ask your child about any of these, he/she will be able to explain and show how to use the strategy.

Remember, there may be days that your child must make corrections on his/her math page. Look over these math sheets that come home. If there are corrections, please send it back to school the next day. The topic is still subtraction. We will be adding vocabulary words to our envelope.

In Science, we will also add a few more vocabulary words. Tools and safety will be our topics this week.
