2 Hour Data Delay Wednesday: Day 10 > Art Class
Thursday: Day 1 > Keyboarding
Friday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.
In Language Arts, things will be slowing down. We will take a week to work on one story. This means now you will see a Spelling Notebook coming home. When the students are Pre-assessed on the list, the words that need to be studied will be found in this notebook. If the student has all of the words correct, then he/she will not need to take the final test. I will let you, know by way of these newsletters, when the final tests will take place.
Decodable readers are being sent home today. Please listen to your child read these to you. He/She should be able to sound out all words in the books. The readers are to be kept at home.
I have listened to the class read the vocabulary words. Overall, they did very well. Any student who brought home flashcards should review them. There will be new words added to the notebook on Friday.
Book 1 will come home on Wednesday. Listen to your child read any/all stories. These may be added to your reading log. Please send this back to school on Thursday.
We are coming to the end of Topic 2, Understanding Subtraction. Please review all pages, especially the Reteaching page that comes home on Thursday. The assessment will be on Friday.
Thursday is Picture Re-Take Day. If you were not happy with your pictures, you may return them and have your child photographed again.
Homework is to read any book your child is interested in every day and then add it to your reading log.
Follow the Spirit Day Dress Ups information that was sent home on Friday.

Wednesday: Day 6 > Library
Thursday: Day 7 > Phys. Ed.
Friday: Day 8 > Music Class
In Language Arts, we will continue to pre assess the remaining spelling words with short vowels. Also, the last two sets of words will be written in the vocabulary notebooks. It will benefit your child to listen to him/her read these a few times a week. I will be listening to them read all of these words by the end of the week.
There will be two comprehension assessments this week. The children will have the opportunity to complete these on their own first, then if necessary, I will read it to them.
We are always working on our reading strategies. Please refer to the page I sent home when reading with your child. When you use the same language at home as they hear in school, it will really solidify the strategies and make them become automatic when they read independently.
Subtraction continues through this week. The lessons focus on subtraction stories. Please look over the pages that come home.
Please send back the September Reading Logs tomorrow, after that the books will be used for the October Log.
Homework is to read any book your child is interested in every day and then add it to your reading log.

In Language Arts, we will continue with our reading strategies to become better readers. As you are reading with your child, ask him/her about what he/she has learned and how to use these strategies.
We are still building our stamina in order to have the muscle to do group work. Our Read to Self/Read to Someone stamina will be up to 10 minutes. The Writing stamina time will be 16 minutes by the end of this week.
The children have now been introduced to the Listening Center. By the end of the week we will learn another of our groups. We are really getting close to try group work. Hopefully if all goes well by the end of next week we can begin!
For Math, we will be finding new ways to think about addition. The lessons are ways to make 8 and 9, joining numbers and adding in any order. Please discuss the topic and examine any errors on the pages that come home in the Take-Home Folder. We did not get as much accomplished last week as I had hoped. We had many changes to our schedule and math suffered for it.

Monday: (No Day) LABOR DAY – No School
Tuesday: Day 6 > Library Class
Wednesday: Day 7 > Phys. Ed.
Thursday: Day 8 > Music Class
Friday: Day 9 > Computer Class
In Language Arts, we have added to our reading strategies… The new strategies for this week will be Cross Checking for Accuracy. When we come upon a word that we are not sure of, after we attempt to sound it out, we ask ourselves, (1) Does is look right? (2) Does it sound right? (3) Does it make sense? Another strategy is Tune Into Interesting Words to Expand our Vocabulary. This is exactly what it sounds like, find and read interesting words.
We will be building our stamina for group work. By the end of the week we will be up to reading 6 minutes with a partner or to ourselves. Building our writing stamina will be up to 12 minutes.
For Math, we will be finding new ways to think about addition. The lessons are ways to make 6, 7, 8 and 9. Please discuss the topic and examine any errors on the pages that come home in the Take-Home Folder.
Homework is to read any material with your child, at least once a day.

In Language Arts, the students will be learning important reading strategies. In a few days, ask your child about…Check for Understanding-this is when we stop reading after a few pages and try to remember what we have read so far. If we are not sure then we Back Up and Reread. There are many more strategies to come…
We will be reviewing in Math. If time allows, our first topic will begin which is, finding new ways to think about addition.
Look for vocabulary cards to come home for science. These may stay home.

I was not in school on Friday. The school was unable to find a substitute so the class had to be split into groups and spend the day with another first grade teacher. Due to this, the Friday Folder was not sent home. You will notice it came home today. Please send it back to school tomorrow.
Our Spelling test this week will be on Wednesday. New words will be given on Thursday. If your child comes home with the TAN notebook and a homework paper, please have them write each misspelled word 3 times.
Continue to review the words in the BLUE notebook. We will have added 4 sets of words in Book 5 by this time.
Reading Fluency checks will take place twice a week for the students who need to read 47 words in a minute. The best practice for this is to read, so keep reading!
We have begun Geometry. The students will be learning about plane shapes and solid figures. The other topic we will be delving into is Adding and Subtracting Two-Digit Numbers. Review all pages that come home.
Three Math Fact Fluency checks will be completed this week. There was one more student that reached the goal! Now we are striving for Advanced by finishing even more problems with sums 10-20 in 3 minutes. So if your child has conquered the sums to 9, please review these higher facts. If your child is still working to reach the sums to 9 goal, then you are continuing to review those.

Friday AND Monday: NO SCHOOL!!!!!!
Thank you to everyone for the wonderful Valentine gifts I received. It was so nice of you to flourish me with valentines, candy/cookie, stationary and even a flower! I really appreciate it all.
The Spelling test we missed last week will be on Tuesday. Every student in the class but one will be taking this. Please review the list with your child.
The new spelling list will be in the tan notebook on Wednesday. If it comes home, then please review these words for the test next week, most likely on Thursday(2/23).
I will begin listening to the students read the vocabulary words in the BLUE notebook this week. If the book has a paper attached, review those words especially. New words for Book 4 will be added on Thursday.
The assessment on Number Patterns will be Thursday. Look for the reteaching page on Wednesday. Practice counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
Keep working on addition facts. Use the flashcards to gain fluency.
Don’t Forget! Your child should be reading all stories to you. This is considered HOMEWORK every single day. After reading the book, add it to the Reading Log. When listening to your child read, remember to use those strategies that we have worked on since the start of the school year. (Check for Understanding, Use the Pictures, Flip the Sound, and so many more…use the reference page sent home if needed.)
We will be going outside for recess unless it is raining or below 40 degrees so send your son/daughter with weather appropriate clothing.
