This Week's Happenings

9/22/14

Monday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Tuesday: Day 5 > Art Class
Wednesday: Day 1 > Music Class
Thursday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.
Friday: Day 3 > Book Exchange Don’t forget your books!

We had an intruder drill today.

In Language Arts, the students will continue to learn and use strategies to help them become better readers. The story this week is about helping animals. The book will come home once this week to read “Pig in a Wig”. Also, a decodable book will be in their folder. Please read this book several times to build accuracy and fluency. You may keep this book at home. On Friday, spelling words in the notebook will be assessed.

Subtraction is what we will be learning in Math. We just started the topic the end of last week. So this week we will really get into it. There may be days that your child must make corrections on his/her page. Look over these math sheets that come home. If there are corrections, please send it back to school the next day.

We are continuing with unit 1 in Science. The next lessons will be about more tools scientists use. I gave each child an envelope for the vocabulary cards. The math cards may be kept in this also. Try to review the vocabulary words 2 or 3 times a week.

**Don’t forget that our room is chilly at times. Please send in a jacket, sweatshirt or sweater WITHOUT a hood. According to our Dress Code Policy, hoods are only permitted on ‘outside’ coats/jackets.

I hope you have an electrifying week!

Monday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Tuesday: Day 5 > Art Class
Wednesday: Day 1 > Music Class
Thursday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.
Friday: Day 3 > Book Exchange Don’t forget your books!

In Language Arts, the students will continue to learn and use strategies to help them become better readers. On Friday, spelling words with short a and reading words with short a and ck will be assessed. Everyone is doing fine at this point. To help your son/daughter please review the workbook pages that come home. These are directly related to the assessments that will be given.

We will have our first math assessment this week. Look for the Reteaching Page to review all of the skills taught in this topic. The following day will be the assessment. At this time, all of the children are doing very well. Keep up the great work at home! Our second topic is Understanding Subtraction. As stated in the title, it will focus on subtraction.

The Science vocabulary cards will come home this week. As with the math cards, keep these until the chapter is complete. The lessons this week will focus on questions a scientist asks and the tools a scientist uses.

**If you would like to send in birthday treats for your child, there are 25 students in our class. Summer birthdays can choose between their half birthday or closer to the end of the school year.

I hope you have an exciting week!

This Week's Happenings

9/8/14

Monday: Day 4 > Computer Class
Tuesday: Day 5 > Art Class
Wednesday: Day 1 > Music Class
Thursday: Day 2 > Phys. Ed.
Friday: Day 3 > Library Class PICTURE DAY!

*Please send in the picture envelopes on Friday.*

In Language Arts, the students have been learning important reading strategies. These strategies will help your child become a better reader. The strategies should be practiced with any book that is interesting to read. Ask your child about…Check for Understanding-this is when we stop reading after a few pages and try to remember what we have read so far. If we are not sure then we Back Up and Reread. Cross Checking for Accuracy is when we come upon a word that we are not sure of, after we attempt to sound it out, we ask ourselves, (1) Does is look right? (2) Does it sound right? (3) Does it make sense?

What’s New…Find, read and use interesting words to Expand our Vocabulary. Just as it states, we are looking for words that will expand our vocabulary.

Math, we will be continuing to find new ways to think about addition. We will be making 9, adding parts to make a whole, adding numbers in any order and solving story problems. Please discuss the topic and examine any errors on the pages that come home in the Take-Home Folder. Look for more vocabulary cards to come home. Keep them until we come to the end of the unit. I will let you know when we are there. Thank you for your cooperation.

Our Science lessons will focus on using our senses and learning what a scientist does. Vocabulary cards might be sent home but it will depend on what we complete.

I hope you have a fantastic week!
